                         Running and mental well being are closely interlinked. A year-long survey by England Athletics of over 13,000 people across England has revealed that 74% of runners have experienced an improvement in their mental health and wellbeing from running.

Welcome to India's first run to promote mental health and emotional wellness.Suicide Prevention India Foundation is partnering with NEB Sports to be the charity partner for the 5K Hope Run at the Shriram Properties Bengaluru Marathon to be held on October 21st. A chance to come and support mental health and emotional wellness by running (or walking!).

  • To build excitement and generate a buzz there will be two day expo on October 19th and 20th where there will be a series of activities including talks and workshops.
    Workshops for Tai Chi, deep breathing, hypnosis, talk therapy, yoga, meditation, diet and nutrition for performance, dance movement therapy, mindfulness, art-based therapy, music therapy, and journaling. All of this will be done by well-known experts. Discounts will be offered and visitors can also book one-on-one slots with various experts.
  • Stalls with will offer discounted merchandise including tee shirts promoting mental wellbeing, food supplements, posters, and mugs.
  • Talk on how mental health tattoos help individuals receive a psychological boost. Visitors can choose from a catalog and sign up for tattoos and get discounts for the same.
  • Meet runners who will talk about how they use running as a way to boost their mental well-being.

Does a run a day really keep mental illness away?

        • Is the stress of daily life getting to you? Keeping you up at night? Maybe even disguising itself as a physical illness as your body doesn’t know how to cope anymore? I’m sure you’ve visited a doctor to restore your physical health, but do you do anything to take care of your mental health?
        • Studies show that people who keep active are less likely to be depressed. In fact, aerobic exercise is said to reduce the symptoms of clinical depression just as effectively as psychotherapy would. In other words, if you’ve ever seen t-shirts with “Running: Cheaper than therapy” on the front, you now know it’s not just a humorous tagline.
        • You don’t need to be unwell to make sure you keep warm in the winter to avoid getting a cold. Just like that, you don’t need to suffer from a mental illness to look after your mental health.
        • Feeling down? If you’ve ever asked a runner why they run, I’m sure they’ll tell you it’s because of the incredible high they feel afterward. This ‘high’ is due to the release of endorphins i.e. the ‘happiness hormone’ which acts as a natural antidepressant. It also facilitates the release of ‘feel good’ chemicals like dopamine and serotonin which reduces symptoms of depression and improves your mood.
        • Stressed out? When done regularly, running can also decrease levels of tension and hence provide anti-anxiety effects. This not only reduces harmful stress hormones like cortisol, but also lifts your mood and hence improves your mental health.
        • Not getting enough sleep? Running tires you out in the best way possible, ensuring a quicker onset of sleep. This not only improves sleep quality, but regulates your sleep cycle and prevents insomnia, one of the leading causes of suicide and suicidal thoughts. Better sleep equals a better mood which means you wake up more than ready to tackle the day ahead.
        • Lazy and demotivated? Aerobic exercises increase the amount of oxygen supplied to the brain which improves your focus and raises your energy levels. In the long run, this means you’re less likely to feel lethargic all the time.
        • Consistency is key. Developing a regular running habit can bring structure into an otherwise unorganised schedule. Creating a distinct goal for your day can help you stay motivated and have something to focus on aside from the stressors life has to offer.
        • Insecure and shy? When you achieve the goals you’ve set for yourself, this boosts your confidence and increases your self-esteem. The most regular you are, the more likely you are to meet other runners. Interacting with them and bonding over your shared love of the activity creates new friendships and can be just the social support system you need to get through challenging times.
