Many professionals prefer to screen for suicide risk verbally rather than to use a standardized paper-and-pencil form. A positive screen from a verbal screening question can lead naturally to a conversation about immediate risk, drivers for suicide, the offering of support, and a more informed and successful referral. This course teaches participants how to use the most widely distributed gatekeeper training program in the world as a verbal suicide risk screening and referral tool in any setting for any age group, including children.

This training program is designed to teach a verbal suicide screening protocol to anyone tasked with conducting an initial screening interview with potentially at-risk populations in any setting. Participants learn how to recognize suicide warning signs, and how to probe for suicide desire, intent and immediate risk, as well as how to make an expert referral.

Modularized in a rich mix of text, video, voice-over PowerPoint™ lectures, scenario-based practice sessions, and other state-of-the-art interactive and e-learning technologies, this program provides a dynamic approach to screening for suicide, risk detection, initial intervention, referral and follow-up.

Upon completion, participants should be able to:

Describe the common myths and facts surrounding suicide
Identify unique verbal, behavioural, and situational suicide warning signs
Screen someone at risk of suicide
Screen children and youth at risk of suicide
Inquire about suicidal intent and desire
Recognize at least three suicide warning signs
Recognize at least three risk factors for suicide
Recognize at least three protective factors against suicide
Demonstrate increased knowledge, skills, self-efficacy and intent to act to intervene with someone at risk of suicide
Describe evidence-based treatments for suicide
Know how to engage and assist a suicidal colleague or co-worker
Describe how to locate referral resources and how to access them
